2018 Chancellor’s Award Winner Gourav Bhowmik

Gourav Bhowmik, a Ph.D. student, has already started his own technology company. 

ALBANY, N.Y. (May 7, 2018) — Originally from India, graduate student Gourav Bhowmik is committed to promoting diversity and innovation in nanotechnology.

Bhowmik, who received a bachelor’s in chemical engineering from Birla Institute of Technology and a master’s in Nanoscale Engineering from UAlbany, is completing his Ph.D. in Nanoscale Engineering at UAlbany. He expects to graduate in December, 2018.

Bhowmik won the President’s Award for International Leadership in 2017 and 2018. He served as president of the Indian Student Organization and the Nano Graduate Student Organization. He is a project assistant for the SUNY Research Foundation at Lawrence Livermore National Lab. He was a senator in the Graduate Student Association where he served on the executive board.

Bhowmik is an active member of the UAlbany community, honored for his dedication to improving the quality of life for international students. He was a chemistry tutor for the Educational Opportunities Program, is a member of the council on student recruitment, and was a campus ambassador and tour guide.

His favorite course at the University was “Innovation & Entrepreneurship,” which he said exposed him to tech-entrepreneurship. Since taking this course he started his own company, LuxOrioN, an LED phosphor technology licensing company.

Bhowmik characterizes the University at Albany as “a hub of innovation” that “helped me take my entrepreneurial skills and my passion for leadership to scale. My education here is a testimony to how beautifully diverse an institution UAlbany is. In fact, the SUNY system is truly a global leader in higher education that has incredibly enriched my educational experience.”
