'I'd Like to Thank the Academy . . .'

ALBANY, N.Y. (March 27, 2018) — The red carpet. The fancy clothes. The films. The flashbulbs.

The Oscars? No, it was the fifth annual World Video Awards, held March 6 in the Campus Center Ballroom. More than 200 freshmen and transfer students from the University’s Living-Learning Communities, along with faculty and student leaders attended the event.

During February, 20 Living-Learning Communities created short videos answering the question “What does it mean to be a member of your World?” The videos were nominated across 12 categories, such as “Best Directing” and “Best Music.”  An esteemed “Academy” comprised of UAlbany senior administration and staff viewed the videos and voted for each category.

For the awards ceremony, students dressed up, walked the red carpet, posed for paparazzi, enjoyed a pre-show reception and then gathered to see who would take home each award and a small gold “Oscar” trophy. Provost James Stellar and Vice Provost and Dean for Undergraduate Education Jeanette Altarriba presented the awards.

And the winners are:
  • Best Moves in a World Video: World of East Asian Studies (A.J. Reitman and C.J. Marquez)
  • Best Use of Music in a World Video: World of Writing
  • Best Costumes in a World Video: World of Digital Forensics
