Joining Ellen at the 'Summit'

ALBANY, N.Y. (Nov. 10, 2017) -- With help from Ellen DeGeneres, three UAlbany students are fulfilling their college dreams on a four-year scholarship.

Part of Ellen’s “Summit” documentary series, and in conjunction with Walmart, an entire senior class at Summit Academy Charter School in Brooklyn were awarded a full-ride to any SUNY school of their choosing on her show last year. Three of the students — Nyasha Biggs, Sharinel Nunez and Melick Lubin — are now freshmen at UAlbany.

The first episode of the series premiered yesterday on EllenTube. It follows six of the students, including Nyasha, Sharinel and Melick, through the journey of leaving their hometown behind to pursue a college education. Producers of the series visited UAlbany’s campus twice for filming this semester.

On Wednesday, the six featured students went on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” to talk about their first few months of college. They were in for yet another surprise when DeGeneres gave each of them another $10,000 to help with their college expenses, courtesy of Walmart.

One new episode of the “Summit” series will air for each of the next six weeks. The series is also available for viewing on the Ellen App.
