UAlbany Center for Jewish Studies Fall 2012 Events

ALBANY, N.Y (September 27, 2012) -- The University at Albany's Center for Jewish Studies announces four fall events encompassing lectures, films, and music to inform and entertain the community-at-large. All events open to the public.

Musical group Mycale performs an a capella repertoire of Jewish art and liturgical songs on Thursday, Oct. 11 at UAlbany's Performing Arts Center.

Mycale Sings John Zorn’s Book of Angels

Four dynamic singer/songwriters perform an a capella repertoire of Jewish art and liturgical songs. This concert is co-sponsored by the UAlbany Performing Arts Center. Tickets are available at the PAC Box Office at (518) 442-3997.

The Wandering View: The Jewish Immigrant in World Cinema
Lecture by Lawrence Baron
Thursday, Oct. 25, 2012 7 p.m. 
Wm. K. Sanford Public Library, Colonie
Lawrence Baron, Professor Emeritus of Jewish Studies at San Diego State University, compares the depictions of Jewish immigrants in several national cinemas including the US, Israel, France and Mexico. The talk will be illustrated with clips from representative films such as The Jazz Singer, Hester Street, Sallah, and Little Jerusalem. Baron is the editor of The Modern Jewish Experience in World Cinema (2011). This event is free and open to the public.

Kristallnacht Interfaith Commemoration: The Rescuers
Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2012 7 p.m.
UAlbany Page Hall, Downtown Campus
Premiere, one-time screening of the film The Rescuers, the inspiring documentary about non-Jewish diplomats who helped save thousands of Jews during the Holocaust. Co-sponsored by the Holocaust Survivors and Friends Education Center and Community Relations Council of Jewish Federation of Northeastern New York. This event is free and open to the public.

The Tragedy of Leon Trotsky
Lecture by Joshua Rubenstein
Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012 7 p.m.
UAlbany Milne Hall Room 200, Downtown Campus
A preeminent revolutionary figure, Leon Trotsky led an upheaval that helped to define the contours of 20th century politics. Rubenstein gives us an interpretation for the 21st century. Joshua Rubenstein is the author of Leon Trotsky: A Revolutionary's Life (2011), the Northeast Regional Director of Amnesty International USA, and an associate at Harvard's Davis Center for Russian & Eurasian Studies. This event is free and open to the public.

The Center for Jewish Studies supports a vibrant and rigorous academic program in Jewish Studies at the University at Albany and is committed to providing scholarships for students, research funds for faculty, and a full calendar of programming for the campus and community.
