Successful submission of a research protocol for review is dependent upon
the investigator satisfying all of the procedural and substantive requirements. The purpose of timely submissions is mandatory to ensure that a sufficient amount of time is available for IRB members to complete a comprehensive review of all of the submitted materials.
Expedited/Exempt Review:
If your study meets the criteria for either expedited review or exemption from ongoing IRB review & approval, there is no official deadline for submitting materials for expedited or exempt review; applications are reviewed on a rolling basis as materials are received. Decisions are usually issued 2 to 4 weeks after submitting all required materials. Please contact the Office of Research Compliance if your application is time-sensitive.
For applications requiring Expedited/Exempt Review, in order for a protocol to be considered, submit the original plus 1 copy of all prepared material (e.g. consent and assent forms - if applicable).
Full (Convened) Board Review:
If your research involves any of the following, your application will likely require review by the full (convened) board:
- Minors, prisoners, pregnant women, impaired adults
- Illegal activities such as drug use
- Private activities/sensitive information such as sexual behavior or medical data
- Deception
Protocols requiring Full Board Review must be submitted no later than the deadline date listed for each meeting date in order to be considered for that meeting.
However, there is no guarantee that all protocols submitted will be placed on a particular meeting agenda. Protocols will be evaluated based on the date of receipt, the number of projects received, and completeness of the application. Submissions are due by 5 PM on the deadline date.
For applications requiring Full Board Review , submit the original plus 11 copies of all prepared materials (e.g. consent and assent forms - if applicable).
Approximately one week after your submission has been received, you will receive email notification from the Office of Research Compliance with additional information and instructions.
Please Note: Incomplete submissions will not be reviewed until all necessary materials have been received regardless of the date of the initial submission.
