Fred Erlich is a founding member and current CEO of Living Resources, a Capital Region multi-service agency that assists and supports more than 1,200 people who are disabled due to birth trauma, accident or illness. With strong ties to UAlbany, first as an undergraduate and later as a graduate of both the SSW and School of Business, Fred recently offered some thoughts to current MSW students.

If you had to condense your current job position into a sentence, what would it say?

Leading a group of 850 multi-disciplinary employees, volunteers and board members to remain in harmony. Growing and steering the organization to help people remain independent, productive and happy.

How did the School of Social Welfare prepare you to enter the profession?

A sense of purpose, some excellent professors, mentors, and internship opportunities. I was taught to always ask for what you believe is necessary for the good of individuals with disabilities.

What about your job keeps you passionate about your work?

To make things happen that are meaningful in people's lives - individuals with disabilities, families, and friends. There are over 3,000 individuals Living Resources touches every day.

What advice would you give to a current social welfare student?

Don't compromise, believe in yourself, and others want to help you live your dreams.

What are your top three self-care activities?

Do everything in moderation; focus on work/life balance; and, stay in touch with outside interests - family, exercise, friendships, and new experiences.
