Building for the Future

ALBANY, N.Y. (July 18, 2016) – If Edward Durell Stone were alive today, chances are he’d be astonished by the massive changes at the Campus Center.

Stone designed the original campus that was built to accommodate 7,500 students. Today, construction on the 55,000-square-foot West addition continues as UAlbany strives to enroll 20,000 students by 2020.

A 400-seat four-story auditorium is rising. A glass-enclosed stairwell will grace the Science Library Courtyard. An outdoor stairway leads to Dutch Quad. Once completed, there will be 16 new food venues in the Campus Center, including a Starbucks.

Among the many offices to be housed in the new addition include: the student association office suites, a food service venue, a meditation room, an aerobics room and a 200-seat multi-use rehearsal and multi-function space intended for sit-down events. When cleared of furniture, this space can be used for student dance groups, aerobics, and by karate clubs.

Expected to be complete by mid-summer 2017, the project involves not only the new space, but also renovation to more than 46,000-square-feet of the existing Campus Center.
