Justice and Multiculturalism Project Explores Intersection of Diversity and Social, Criminal Justice

September 20 Lecture, "Justice, Genocide, and Multicultural Issues" Launches Initiative

The "Justice and Multiculturalism in the 21st Century" project will explore diversity and social and criminal justice.

ALBANY, N.Y. (September 19, 2012) -- The University at Albany's School of Criminal Justice announces the "Justice and Multiculturalism in the 21st Century" initiative, a year-long project designed to engage the community in an exploration of the wide-ranging intersection of social and criminal justice in an increasingly diverse world through a lecture and film series (presented in conjunction with the New York State Writers Institute) and panel discussions. It culminates April 2013 with a national symposium exploring issues related to gender, sexuality, sexual violence and victimization.

The initiative commences with the lecture "Justice, Genocide, and Multicultural Issues," presented by Northeastern University Criminal Justice Professor Nicole Rafter on Thursday, September 20. Nicole Rafter is the author of the monographs Partial Justice: Women, State Prisons, and Social Control; Creating Born Criminals; Shots in the Mirror: The Criminal Brain; and (with M. Brown) Criminology Goes to the Movies. The lecture will be held at Emerson Hall, First Unitarian Universalist Society of Albany, 405 Washington Avenue. The free lecture, which is open to the public, begins at noon, followed by an open discussion at 1 p.m. Beverages and dessert will be provided.

“The ‘Justice and Multiculturalism in the 21st Century’ project continues UAlbany’s School of Criminal Justice tradition of interdisciplinary collaboration and community engagement," said Frankie Bailey, author and professor at UAlbany’s top-ranked School of Criminal Justice who developed and oversees the project. "We hope this initiative sets the groundwork for the establishment of a multi-year Justice and Multiculturalism Institute at the School to serve as a virtual and physical meeting place for scholars and community leaders interested in partnering on innovative approaches to addressing future justice challenges."

Bailey is author of a number of academic and fiction books and is currently at work on a book about clothing and crime, with the working title Strip Search: Crime, Justice, and Clothing in American Culture.
