Elizabeth Hoag

Education:

I am a PhD candidate here at SUNY Albany, focusing on archaeology and writing my dissertation. I did my undergraduate work in Anthropology at Ithaca College, Ithaca NY, and MA in Anthropology at the University of Cincinnati. For my master's research, I worked with materials collected from the a survey of Tres Zapotes, Veracruz, Mexico. I analyzed daub from ancient wattle and daub structures, and kiln fragments from ceramic production at the site.

Field Work:

I have spent three seasons at Tres Zapotes, from 1995 to 1997, doing survey under the direction of Dr. Christopher Pool, from the University of Kentucky, and the spring of 1999 on a survey in central Veracruz, directed by Dr. Barbara Stark, of Arizona State University. I also spent time in Puebla in 1998 doing ceramic analysis for Dr. Ken Hirth, of Penn State.
I have also participated in field and lab work in Illinois, Ohio, North Carolina, and Connecticut.

Current Research:

My dissertation work will focus on ceramic style and social interaction and boundaries in the Mixtequilla region of Veracruz. I am particularly interested in the evolution of pottery styles in the Gulf Coast from the Late Formative to Early Classic periods. I want to investigate the ways in which style was used to communicate identity and political association, as well as community interaction.

Research Interests:

My primary interests are economic anthropology, ceramic production technology and organization, political organization, cultural complexity, and spatial archaeology.
