Sen. Schumer Announces Plans for Cyber Education Pilot Program

ALBANY, N.Y. (Oct. 8, 2019) – U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer visited UAlbany yesterday to discuss his plans to help train the next generation of cybersecurity professionals.

Speaking at University Hall, Schumer announced a major push for the creation of a cyber education pilot program. Once launched, it will provide funding to build a pipeline between community colleges and four-year universities in New York, preparing students for jobs in this high-demand, growing industry.

During his visit, Schumer stated that the nation has seen a spike in cyber-attacks in recent years, targeting the stability of American elections, as well as major employers like Equifax, leading to the exposure of personal information, including the social security numbers of over 100 million people.

Studies have indicated a need for 1.8 million new cybersecurity experts worldwide by 2022.

“This groundbreaking cyber pilot program would be a win-win-win For UAlbany, students, privacy and security in the United States,” he said.

Schumer expressed his excitement about UAlbany’s interdisciplinary program offerings in cybersecurity, offered through both the College of Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security and Cybersecurity (CEHC) and School of Business’ Digital Forensics program.

He also shared renderings from UAlbany’s ETEC building, which will be the future home of CEHC, once completed in 2021. His visit was scheduled to be held at ETEC’s construction zone, but was moved inside due to rainy conditions.
