Community Engagement a Priority for UAlbany Students

Whether it's building a school for children suffering from HIV/AIDS in Uganda or tutoring adolescents in foster care, students at the University at Albany have made a commitment to volunteerism. So when flooding from Hurricane Irene ravaged the small upstate New York rural community of Schoharie in 2011, UAlbany students were there to lend a hand.

Floodwaters from Schoharie Creek ripped through century-old homes, knocked over silos, upended SUVs and spread wreckage over a vast area in August. The cleanup was still ongoing in November when a busload of UAlbany students arrived to lend a hand by clearing debris from a cornfield. Their efforts to assist a regional community in need did not go unnoticed, as Schoharie County volunteers prepared a meal in gratitude for the students’ support.

UAlbany Students Honored for Making a World of Difference

An estimated 6,800 of UAlbany's students participate in community-engaged service each year through both volunteer work and course-related activities.

In May of 2011, UAlbany was named to the 2010 (U.S.) President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for engaging its students, faculty and staff in meaningful service that achieved measurable results in the community during the 2009-10 academic year. CNCS admitted a total of 641 colleges and universities to the Honor Roll for their impact on issues ranging from literacy and neighborhood revitalization to the support of at-risk youth.

Aiding flood victims in Schoharie, N.Y., is just one of the ways University at Albany students, faculty and staff make a World of Difference.
