Student Association Teams with Suicide Prevention Organization on Fundraising Campus Walk

Surpasses $5,000 Goal with More Than $8,350

On Sunday, May 1, the University at Albany Student Association (SA) will host the area's first-ever campus walk to benefit the nation’s leading organization dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide.

The proceeds for "Out of the Darkness Campus Walk" benefit the non-profit American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), which conducts research, education, advocacy, and suicide-prevention initiatives, as well as programs to support those impacted by suicide.

SA and the AFSP's Capital Region, N.Y., chapter are co-sponsoring the event, which begins at 3 p.m. on the Academic Podium of UAlbany's Uptown Campus. Participants can register free and online through noon April 30.

Day-of-walk registration will take place on the Podium from 1:30 to 3 p.m. in front of the Campus Center Small Fountain. T-shirts will be awarded to participants who raise $100 or more.

With the help of local businesses and community members, donations have climbed more than 65 percent beyond the organizers' original goal of $5,000. "We are excited to be a part of efforts for suicide prevention and awareness and hope to continue to team up with AFSP in the coming years," said Kristen Distler, a UAlbany senior and the event walk's chairperson. Distler's high school alma mater, Monroe-Woodbury in Central Valley, N.Y., lost two students to suicide this January.
