Research Compliance refers to the process by which the University, in accordance with the applicable laws, regulations, and policies certifies that research activity is conducted in a legal and ethical way. Areas in which compliance with policy or regulation is a concern for the University and for its researchers and scholars are detailed in this website. For each compliance area, information is presented on the policy or regulatory issues, methods for complying with those policies or regulations, and other information. If you have questions or are not able to find what you're looking for, please do not hesitate to contact us. We also welcome your comments or suggestions for how we can better serve your needs.

EXEMPT REVIEW RESEARCH CATEGORIES!

Notice:
This website contains new forms for IRB and IACUC submissions. As of October 2, 2006, all IRB and IACUC requests must be submitted using the new forms. New forms may be found under each submission type under the "Forms” link. Thank you!

*****************

Inclusion of the Exempt Category for the review of research involving human subjects.

UAlbany has approved the inclusion of the Exempt category for the review of research involving human subjects.

This change means that there are now three review categories for Institutional Review Board (IRB) review: Full, Expedited, and Exempt.

Examples of exempt review research:

survey interview research with adult subjects; nonidentified existing records; observation of the public behavior of subjects where there is no manipulation of the subject; and some classroom activity and educational testing.

Note: All research involving the collection of data, through intervention or interaction, with living individuals or human tissues, will be reviewed by the IRB. An Investigator is NOT empowered with the ability to make the determination of the level of review – only the IRB may make the final determination.

For more information, please contact the Office of Research Compliance at 518-437-4569.
