Email from Chief Wiley

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:

The University Police Department (UPD) and the Albany Police Department (APD) are jointly investigating the events that took place just after 1:00 am Saturday morning on the #11 CDTA bus. I am writing to update the University community on the status of our investigation.

Initial, eye-witness, information indicated the incident started on Western Avenue near Madison Avenue.  A review of the video from the CDTA bus has established that the encounter began off campus with verbal exchanges, but that the physical confrontation took place after the bus had driven onto UAlbany’s Main Campus.

The CDTA bus video is also being used to identify the other persons involved as well as potential witnesses.  We will be reaching out to those who were on the bus as we identify them.  All passengers and anyone with information that could help with our investigation are encouraged to:

  • Call UPD at (518) 442-3131,
  • Email UPD at [email protected], or;
  • Contact APD at (518) 462-8039.

To date, we have spoken with two passengers on the bus and have received videos taken by cell phone of the incident. We offer our thanks to those who provided the videos to us.

The investigation is still in its early stages. The criminal justice process requires us to be detailed and thorough.  That takes time.  We are committed to sharing information with the community on a regular basis, but we ask for your support both in bringing forward any information you have, and by giving us the time we need to talk with all those involved.

Finally, I want you to know that, although there is no evidence of a continuing threat, UPD will continue to assign additional personnel to monitor campus safety.

Thank you.
