UAlbany's Running Spirit

Gered Burns |
Whether you run for health, joy or both, there’s plenty of running opportunities at UAlbany. You can put on your track shoes and run for a Division I team, you can run for fun with the Albany Running Exchange club or you can jog with a buddy around the campus’s 3-mile Perimeter Road.
This spring Gered Burns won the 800-meter run and anchored the winning 4 x 800-meter relay, as UAlbany finished second in the men’s competition at the America East Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Northeastern’s Solomon Track. The Great Danes were edged out by only 1.5 points, in the closest meet in conference history.

Josh Merlis |
For those who love to run for health and a little less competition, UAlbany student Josh Merlis founded the Albany Running Exchange in September 2002. His goal: to “bring students together on campus who share a common interest in running and the desire to improve one’s own health.” The club has more than sixty members and is now involved with other running groups to compete in everything from 5k runs to marathons. Multiple student “group runs” are held each day for the members’ convenience and camaraderie. UAlbany has over 200 clubs and organizations, but there is always the opportunity to start up a new club, as Merlis did.
UAlbany’s campus has an ideal running perimeter of 3 miles for the daily or occasional jogger, walker, or dog walker to enjoy. The one-mile circumference of the podium (including a spin around each of the academic buildings) also offers opportunity for a quick lunchtime power walk or stroll.
