Languages, Literatures & Cultures
The Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures (LLC) at the University at Albany offers 10 languages with graduate degrees in French and Spanish, undergraduate degrees and minors in French, Italian, Russian and Spanish (most also offer an honors component), and a minor in Portuguese. Additional languages available for study include Arabic, Dutch, German and Latin.
Studying a language or culture you're curious about, interested in or passionate about is commendable, but in today’s global economy and sophisticated world completing your education with a solid background in understanding other languages and cultures can also give you an advantage--language skills and cultural sensitivity are valuable in all sectors. Our graduates are found in every area, from international business, government, marketing and communications, to healthcare, science and technology, publishing, education, social service, travel, hospitality, and non-profits. See what some of our graduates are doing on the Alumni page.
Students wishing to major or minor in areas without official degrees may do so with a student initiated interdisciplinary major/minor. Students not enrolled in a degree program but wanting to study languages may enroll "nondegree" through the Office of General Studies and take individual courses (high school seniors who excel in their coursework are also eligible).
