Conflict Resolution and Civic Responsibility

Mission Statement

Developing the full potential of students is central to the role of Student Success. Working in partnership with other members of the University community, we provide for the intellectual, cultural, academic, social, physical, ethical, career, spiritual and emotional development of students so that they are more fully prepared as citizens of the University and the broader society. Student Success is an essential contributor to the integration of teaching, research, creative expression, and public service in the University's undergraduate, graduate and professional programs.

Members of the Student Success staff join with their colleagues on the teaching faculty and with students in defining the University as characterized by the following discrete, yet interdependent, qualities referenced in the University at Albany Mission Statement:

  • First, a commitment to the pursuit and advancement of knowledge, for its own sake and for its practical benefits to society;
  • Second, a commitment to the teaching of students, to their growth in knowledge, and to that reinforcement of character, through co-curricular experiences, which enables them to develop emotionally, physically, and socially even as they mature intellectually;
  • Third, a commitment to the larger interests of society through acts of public service, and by fostering the ideals of social justice;
  • Fourth, a commitment to freedom of thought, inquiry, and expression, and to the rights and obligations of faculty and students to pursue knowledge, wherever it may lead;
  • Fifth, a commitment to profit intellectually and imaginatively from differences of opinion and of culture.
  • Student Success provides leadership for the integration of programs and services that enhance recruitment, retention, safety, quality of life, and the development of students from diverse backgrounds in order to assist the University at Albany in fulfilling its mission and its promise for the future.
  • In order to attain our goal of developing students fully, we are sensitive to and knowledgeable about different backgrounds, cultures, and personal characteristics evident in such a diverse student body. We create educational opportunities, help maintain physical and mental health, and reduce barriers that inhibit the full development of students. Further, we provide opportunities for public service through student volunteerism and leadership development.
  • We develop learning and living environments that are safe, secure, clean, orderly, accessible and fully utilized by all students, faculty, and staff.
  • Student Success promotes respect for the individuality of each student in deliberations on institutional mission, policies, organizational structure, academic programs, and culture. We are fully committed to promoting justice and to insuring that all students are extended a full and equal place in our community regardless of their abilities, race, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, or religion.
  • We insure that our Student Success perspective is added to all other institutional perspectives and promote a partnership role in the effective and efficient management of the University at Albany.
