Alumni Gathering Planned as UAlbany Great Danes Take On the UCLA Bruins

Join Culinary Institute Luncheon and Tour of Eleanor Roosevelt’s Home
On Nov. 11, work up an appetite as you start the day with a tour of Eleanor Roosevelt’s home, Val-Kill. After the tour, take a short bus ride to the Culinary Institute of America, where you will feast on an incredible meal at the American Bounty Restaurant. Happy Hour Planned in Memory of Tom Eggers ’93
Help celebrate the memory of Tom Eggers, a 1993 UAlbany alumnus who passed away from cancer in January 2005, at Stout NYC (133 West 33rd Street, New York City) Nov. 3 at 5:30 p.m. A $10 donation, collected at the door, will benefit the University at Albany in memory of Tom. U.S. Rep. John Sweeney announced an IBM Corp., Applied Materials and Albany NanoTech partnership to conduct advanced research and development in six areas essential to the development of future generations of computer nanochips. Under the $300 million, five-year program, more than 100 researchers and engineers from Applied Materials, IBM, and Albany NanoTech will conduct research, beginning with the 32nm (1/3000 the width of a human hair) computer chip device node. UAlbany and City School District of Albany Forge Relationship
The City School District of Albany and UAlbany have announced the formation of a strategic alliance between Albany High School and the University to leverage combined strengths for the development of young talent and the prosperity of the Albany community. Full story >>

$1.4 Million Awarded to University Counseling Center to Combat Alcohol Abuse
UAlbany's Middle Earth Peer Assistance Program received a $1.4 million grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration to fund interventions with college students at high risk for alcohol and substance abuse. Full Story >>

UAlbany and Ordway Research Institute Announce Agreement to Enhance Region's Research Profile
UAlbany and the Ordway Research Institute have announced a collaborative agreement that will enhance biotechnology and life science research at both institutions and in Tech Valley. School of Business Announces Plans for New Building
The University has unveiled plans for a new, 80,000-square-foot School of Business building. The $40 million project, designed to be student focused, will feature technologically advanced classrooms and meeting spaces. The school's goal is to become the premier business school in the Northeast by attracting top students, bolstering partnerships with national firms, increasing resources dedicated to research, and contributing to the economic development of the Capital Region.

New UAlbany Nano+MBA Program to Produce "Industry-Ready" Leaders
UAlbany’s College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering and School of Business have partnered to create a first-ever joint degree program dedicated to producing highly skilled business leaders equipped to compete in today's global high-tech industry. Full Story >>

Two professors of educational theory and practice received a $100,000 start-up grant to study the evolution and accessibility of writing instruction at the middle and high school level in the United States over the past quarter century. Judith Langer, founder and director of the Albany Institute for Research in Education and director of the Center on English Learning & Achievement, and Arthur Applebee, leading professor in the Department of Educational Theory and Practice, will head the national study. Graduate student Nancy Werner works with Jan-Quan Brown.Literacy Lab: Responsive Teachers and Community Engagement
For the past five years, the reading department in the School of Education has run its Literacy Lab at Arbor Hill Elementary School in Albany. Each graduate student involved with the lab is paired with one elementary school student requiring help with literacy learning. The program provides a community service and at the same time helps graduate students become more comfortable teaching a diverse range of students. Full Story >>

Gellis Awarded Grant to Advance Work in Mental Health and Aging
Zvi Gellis, director of the Center for Mental Health and Aging at UAlbany, was awarded a grant from the New York State Office for the Aging to evaluate the Telehealth Program for Homecare at St. Peter's Health Care Center in Albany, N.Y. Medical and communications technologies have been successfully made portable to enable their availability in the home of older adults. The focus of the program is to maintain the older person in the least restrictive environment (home) and improve quality of life by providing timely biobehavioral interventions for symptom control.

Rizzo Receives Grant to Implement Senior Leadership Program
School of Social Welfare faculty member Vicky Rizzo, in partnership with Senior Services of Albany, has been awarded a $250,000 New Generation grant to implement a Senior Leadership Program in the Capital Region. The program will be a nationally replicable model that provides retired baby boomer professionals with meaningful access to civic engagement through volunteering. At the end of a two-year period, the volunteers will be placed in non-profit organizations.

Jamar Wilson Basketball Season Tickets Now Available
Season tickets for the 2005-06 UAlbany basketball season are on sale now. You can purchase a combination season ticket for both the men's and women's home games starting at $75. Men’s basketball plays a 12-game home schedule that includes eight America East Conference opponents, plus non-league dates with Harvard and Cornell. Women’s basketball has 10 home games in 2005-06, including a match-up with Big East Conference foe Syracuse Dec. 20. For more information, call (518) 442-4683.

Tina Bryson UAlbany Opens Alumni Turf Field as Women’s Field Hockey’s New Home
UAlbany Director of Athletics Lee McElroy has announced the completion for game competition of Alumni Turf Field, which will serve as the home venue for the women’s field hockey team and provide a multi-use recreational facility for all university students. Alumni Turf Field’s surface is Sportexe Hockey Turf Elite, a knitted nylon system that is made up of soft fibers that allows for improved playability, player comfort, ease of maintenance and dependability. Loan Consolidation Program Helps Graduates Save
The student loan grace period for most 2005 graduates will be ending soon. Graduates who consolidate their eligible student loans before their grace period expires are eligible to receive an additional interest rate discount of .60 percent, providing considerable savings over the life of the loan. The Alumni Loan Consolidation Program offers additional benefits to graduates. Full story>>
