Join the UAlbany Alumni Association and meet alumna Carolee Carmello ’83, who plays the lead in Broadway’s smash hit, “Mamma Mia.” Enjoy the show, a musical based on Abba’s best-loved songs, July 9, at 2 p.m., and meet its star afterward at an exclusive UAlbany event. Greeks Gather at Sutter's on the Deck
Gather at the ol’ watering hole and mingle with fellow Greek alumni June 23 at 5:30 p.m. Come represent your fraternity or sorority at the trivia contest for a chance to win alumni merchandise. Appetizers will be served – cash bar available. You must be 21 years old to attend this event. The cost is $5 for Alumni Association members/$10 for non-members. Capital District Chapter Sponsors Tri-City Valley Cats Alumni Night
Bring family and friends to a picnic buffet and then watch the Tri-City Valley Cats (Houston Astros) take on the Aberdeen Iron Birds (Baltimore Orioles) July 17. Compete against other alumni for prizes and bragging rights. Art Museum Features Contemporary Artists
The University Art Museum is featuring Nina Bovasso – Deep in my heart there’s a house that can hold just about all of you; Jean Shin – Accumulations; and Stacks, Loops and Intersections: Code Sketches by John F. Simon Jr. These three exhibits feature new, site-specific installations by contemporary artists whose work transcends the boundaries of their respective mediums. UAlbany Establishes Center for the Elimination of Minority Health Disparities
UAlbany has established the Center for the Elimination of Minority Health Disparities. The center is funded by a three-year $1.24 million grant from the National Institutes of Health and endorsed by the New York State Department of Health (CEMHD). CEMHD will focus its efforts on smaller cities, including Amsterdam and Albany. Full story >>

PEN Award Acknowledges UAlbany Poet and Translator
UAlbany Professor of English Pierre Joris is the recipient of the 2005 PEN Award for Poetry in Translation. Joris was recognized for his translation from the German of Lightduress by Paul Celan (Green Integer, 2004). Full story >>

Study Shows Heart Bypass Patients Fare Better
Cardiac bypass surgery is safer than stent procedures and associated with higher rates of long-term survival for patients with two or more diseased arteries, according to a report authored by Edward Hannan of the UAlbany School of Public Health and colleagues in the May 26 edition of The New England Journal of Medicine. UAlbany NanoTech College Ranked Among Top Universities for Nano and Microtechnology
The College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering at UAlbany, the first college in the world devoted exclusively to the study of nanoscale scientific concepts, was rated among the top universities in the nation for nanotechnology in a recent ranking compiled by Small Times magazine. Small Times is the leading trade publication covering nanotechnology, microtechnology and MEMS/NEMS research. Full Story >>

SSW Kicks Off 40th Anniversary Celebration
During the International Social Work Research Practice Symposium in June, the School of Social Welfare kicked off a year-long celebration to commemorate the school’s 40th anniversary. Alumni of the school will receive an invitation to a series of events highlighting 40 years of collaboration, innovation and community engagement through education, research and practice.

Alumni Honored With Public Service Awards
The Honorable Richard C. Wesley ’71, judge, United States Court of Appeals, Second Circuit, delivered the annual John E. Burton Lecture at UAlbany last month. Following the lecture, the Distinguished Public Service Awards were presented to four individuals who have made outstanding contributions to public service. The recipients are Frances Allen, IBM fellow emerita, honored by the School of Information Science and Policy; Diana Jones Ritter, executive deputy comptroller, honored by the Nelson A. Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy; Mark Kissinger, deputy secretary to the governor for Health and Human Services, honored by the School of Social Welfare; and Chauncey Parker, New York State director of Criminal Justice and commissioner of the Division of Criminal Justice Services, honored by the School of Criminal Justice.

SSW Internships in Aging Project Celebrates Five Years
The Internships in Aging Project celebrated its fifth anniversary this May with a reception highlighting program successes and honoring the John A. Hartford Foundation and the William Randolph Hearst Foundation as Funders of the Year. Alumna Tianna Moscinski Pettinger '01, a member of the first class of interns in the program received the Alumni Award. Diane VanDusen ’98, ’99 and Julie Poniatowski O'Donnell ’01 were honored as mentors.

Great Danes Win 2004-05 America East Commissioner's Cup
UAlbany’s Great Danes have earned their first America East Commissioner’s Cup, after completing their fourth season in the America East Conference. The Commissioner's Cup annually recognizes the strongest athletic program in the conference. Ratings are determined by a scoring system that rewards schools for success both during the regular season and at championship competitions in the conference's 22 sports. Full story >>

UAlbany Announces 2004-05 Athletes of the Year
Luke Daquino, an All-American lacrosse attackman, and Blair Buchanan, a volleyball setter who also earned All-American recognition, have been chosen UAlbany's 2004-05 male and female athletes of the year. They were selected by the head coaches of UAlbany's 19-sport intercollegiate program. Full story>>

UAlbany Breaks Ground on All-Weather Athletic Fields
UAlbany has broken ground for two new all-weather athletic fields. Among those joining President Kermit L. Hall for the groundbreaking ceremony was John Fallon Jr. ’85, whose contribution helped finance the lacrosse field. John Fallon Field will be home to the men's and women's lacrosse teams, while an adjacent field will be home to women's field hockey and serve as a multi-use recreational field for UAlbany students. Full story>>

Alumnus Signs with Major League Soccer Team
Bouna Coundoul '05, former goalkeeper on the UAlbany men's soccer team, has signed a developmental contract with major league soccer's Colorado Rapids. Coundoul graduated with a bachelor’s degree in information science.

The UAlbany Alumni Association voted in three new members to the board of directors June 4: Christine Bouchard ’73, ’87, associate vice president for Student Affairs at UAlbany; Richard Cardillo ’81,’83, a business development executive with IBM; and Dr. Jane Winer ’69, ’70, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Texas Tech University.
