Citation Formats
Different disciplines (such as English, Psychology, History, etc.) use different citation formats for indicating when and how sources are used.
Some of the more popular citation formats you may encounter include MLA (which is common in English and other Language and Literature departments), APA (most common in Psychology), ASA (most common in Sociology), and Chicago Style (which refers to the Chicago Handbook of Style and is common in discipline such as History).
Before you begin a writing assignment, it is important that you consult with your professor (or, if you are working on a piece for publication, your editor) regarding what citation format you should use, as the forms listed above incorporate items such as in-text citation, footnotes, endnotes and publication information differently.
