NYCLU Leaders and Author Daniel Levitas Discuss Civil Liberties on Jan. 22

ALBANY, N.Y. ( December 31, 2003) -- �Faces of Liberty,� a photo-journalism exhibit highlighting significant court cases of the New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU), will be on display at the University at Albany�s uptown University Library from Jan. 6 through Feb. 25, 2004. In addition to the display, two Jan. 22, 2004 speaking events will address the broad issues of individual freedom and civil liberties. Displays and events are free and open to the public.

�The photo-journal exhibit puts human faces on complex civil liberties issues by documenting the challenges for ordinary men and women who face unpopularity and adversity to stand up for their beliefs,� says the text accompanying the exhibit.

On Jan. 22, Melanie Trimble, executive director of the NYCLU Capital Region chapter, and attorney Scott Fein will discuss legal cases documented in the exhibit in �Civil Liberties and Recent Political Events." The forum is at 4 p.m. in the Cobb Room, University Library.

Also on Jan. 22, Daniel Levitas, author of The Terrorist Next Door: The Militia Movement and the Radical Right (2002), will speak on �Civil Liberties Under Assault." The address is at 7:30 p.m. in the Standish Room, New Library, uptown campus. Levitas is a writer and researcher on the subjects of racist, anti-Semitic and neo-Nazi organizations. The Terrorist Next Door is a definitive study of the historical roots of the American militia movement and rural radical right, and of the origins and ideology of racist paramilitary groups. Levitas has published in major American newspapers and magazines on these subjects, and has testified as an expert witness in American and Canadian courts since 1986.
