Personal Safety Alert

On October 17, 2005, at 9:15 p.m., on the 400 block of Hudson Avenue in the City of Albany, two University at Albany students were walking from their car to their apartment when they were approached by two men, one of whom produced a handgun. The victims surrendered their property and fled. There were no personal injuries sustained as a result of this incident.

Albany PD is investigating this incident. The University Police Department has increased its patrols at the perimeter of our downtown campus and Alumni Quad.

There will be an open forum to address recent incidents that have occurred in the area around Alumni Quad and the Draper Complex. It will be held on Thursday, October 27 at 8:00 p.m. in the Alumni Quad Dining Hall (between Alden and Waterbury). Albany Police and University Police will be represented, as well as Tom Gebhardt and Candace Merbler, the Co-Chairs of the Advisory Committee on Campus Security. If you frequent that downtown area, I encourage you to attend.

As always, please be mindful of your personal safety. I remind you:

Don't walk alone at night if at all possible

Keep a cell phone to call police should you encounter a problem

Be aware of your surroundings; be aware of places people can hide

  Avoid dark places

If you are walking on a dark, quiet street with no traffic, walk in the road

Thank you.
