The Life Sciences Greenhouse core features two separate growing rooms,
each with its own climate control system and supplemental lighting for
year-round propagation of a variety of plant species and experimental
systems that require ambient light. The separate work room ("headhouse")
stores supplies, tools, and instruments, and is designed for preparing,
processing, and studying plant materials,
Projects and experiments within the last year include: (1)cultivation of
native Albany Pine bush plants for research and teaching labs; (2) a
graduate student experiment testing invasion and competition among
different plant species; (3) a graduate student experiment on propagule
dispersal and population genetics of Adirondack alpine mosses; (4) another
graduate student experiment on the capacity of vegetated roof systems to
filter contaminants borne in atmospheric deposition; (5) propagation of
plant material by a College of Nanotechnology scientist for use in
modeling biological microstructures as templates for nano-scale
fabrication; (6) experiments on induced defenses in plants by a visiting
postdoctoral scholar. In addition, UAlbany Grounds Dept. and ULibrary
staff grow seedlings for campus beautification projects, including the
Science Library courtyard.
