ITS-DHCP Pre-Registration (Register your PC from another building)

In order to use your computer to access the University's network, you must first register it. You can register your machine for use in buildings (subnets) other than the one you are currently at by following these directions.

*IMPORTANT* - Since this process may take some time, you should register your computer before your class starts.

In order to register your computer, you will need to have already activated your Unix account. This must be done in order to allow you to authenticate yourself to the network.

(You can activate your Unix account by visiting http://www.albany.edu/myualbany, and clicking the Password Set/Reset button. To activate your Unix account, you will need your PIN. Your PIN should have been mailed to you in a letter (regular mail) from the CIO. If you do not know your PIN, you can contact the ITS Helpdesk by phone at 442-3700, or in person at LC-27 to get it.)

You must also ensure that your computer's TCP/IP properties are set to obtain an IP address automatically. Contact your TCF for help with this.

Once the above conditions are met, follow these steps to register your computer:

  1. First, connect your computer's NIC (Network Interface Card) to the network jack using an ethernet cable.
  2. Open a web browser to http://netreg.albany.edu.
  3. The next page will be "Welcome to the Network Registration System". It will describe why you need to do this process, and will provide links to the University's Computing Policies. Read the page, and click "Enter".
  4. A window will pop up asking you to enter your NetID and Password. Here, you will enter your NetID and Unix Password.
  5. The next page will say "Main" and will list machines currently registered to your id. Click "Register New Machine".
  6. The next page to appear will be say "Machine Registration - Register a New Machine". Choose the location you wish to register for from the pull-down menu, and click "Continue".
  7. The next page to appear will be say "Machine Registration - Register a New Machine - Basic Information".

Subnet - This should be filled in automatically for you based on your choice from the previous page.

Hostname - This field is optional. (To find your hostname, click here.)

Mode - Leave the default ("dynamic"), unless you will be registering a machine for use in only one location (such as your office), and don't plan on using it elsewhere. If this is the case, then select "static".

Hardware Address - Fill in your computer's MAC address. Click here for instructions for your operating system.

Affiliation - Choose your department from the pull-down menu.

  8. Click the "Continue" button.
  9. You should see a screen saying that your machine was added to the network, with a list of all machines registered to your name. You can close this, you're done!
