Anti-virus applications, such as Symantec (Norton), are designed to scan, find, and delete any known viruses or malware. However, it is very important to realize that since it only scans for known malicious software, you need to keep your virus definitions up to date. The definitions tell the anti-virus application what programs are viruses, or malware.
The University at Albany purchased a site license for Symantec's Anti-Virus Corporate Edition. The software is licensed for University owned systems and students' personal computers.
Please note that having anti-virus installed and updated is one of the required standards for connecting to the University network.
Students: The University's current license agreement allows the distribution of Symantec Anti-Virus Corporate Edition (SAV CE) to all matriculated students. Please see the Security Tools: Symantec page for more information. Note that after installation, you will still have to update the program frequently. If you suspect you have a virus, you will need to run a virus scan. This is best done in Safe Mode.
Faculty/Staff: The University currently does not distribute anti-virus for use on faculty or staff personal machines. University owned computer will have Symantec already installed. The University installed copy of Symantec is pre-set to automatically update its definitions.
Additional Information: For more information on using Symantec Anti-virus, please visit the Security Tools: Symantec page.
