Summary: On September 15 2006 Microsoft updated knowledge base article 920958 to include information about a known problem with file corruption on NTFS systems following the installation of security bulletin MS06-049 (MS06-049 was part of the security bulletin release for August 2006). In concert with the update of knowledge base article 920958, Microsoft also released knowledge base article 925308, which describes the symptoms of this problem in more detail and also makes available a hotfix and workaround option for affected users.
Recommended Actions: Administrators of Windows 2000 systems that have experienced file corruption problems following the installation of security bulletin MS06-049 are encouraged to read the knowledge base articles (links provided below) as they may be beneficial to troubleshooting/system recovery efforts.
ITS Actions: ITS Systems Management and Operations Staff will apply necessary hotfixes and/or workarounds to any appropriate ITS servers as part of the next scheduled system update.
