UAD Tells Their Story

PeopleSoft Higher Education User Group—March, 2005

In March, seven staff members from UAD attended the national PeopleSoft Higher Education User Group (HEUG) meeting. The conference was attended by 4,500 representatives of higher education institutions in the United States as well as some international institutions.

All seven staff members were either presenters or co-presenters for four different sessions. Attendees shown here are Marybeth Salmon, Jane Kadish, Thomas Jones, Jeffrey Goodwin, Meg Fryling, Shahnaz Sadeghi and Liz Medvetz, in addition to Karen LaRocque from the Student Accounts Office. Absent from the photo are Brenda Wright and Gayle Gellner who represented the Financial Aid Office.

Since UAD has done a number of unique tasks as part of our implementation, many other institutions are interested in hearing our story.

For years, Liz Medvetz has been a leader in the training field. She has been instrumental in establishing the HEUG's End User Training & Support track and developing it to what it is today. Liz started the PeopleSoft Training Listserv after attending the HEUG conference in 2000 and seeing the need for trainers to communicate and network on issues/concerns focused on end user training. UAlbany hosted the Training listserv, which had over 300 subscribers, until the HEUG took it over in 2003. She has done many HEUG presentations, a pre-conference workshop and several panel discussions on training. Other campuses have modeled their training programs and documentation after the work that Liz has done. She is always ready to share her documentation templates with others. The attendees look forward to her presentations because they are very entertaining as well as informative. Liz incorporates music as well as humor in her sessions. This year, she gave all attendees at her presentation a UAlbany Summer Sessions visor as a give-away.

Tom Jones and Jeff Goodwin participated in a panel discussion on load testing with their peers from the California State University and the University of Akron. Very few institutions do any formal testing to determine how their system will be able to handle the volume of students that attempt to use the system at peak times. This is the second year that Tom and Jeff have discussed load testing. Their sessions have generated a great deal of interest and have been very valuable to other institutions. Tom and Jeff have received numerous follow-up calls regarding this topic.

Jane Kadish and Meg Fryling made a presentation on our Student Financials/Financial Aid datamart. This custom add-on to PeopleSoft has enabled our institution to closely monitor and control the flow of Federal financial aid as the money is disbursed to the student.

Marybeth Salmon and Shahnaz Sadeghi's presentation was on our Student Records data mart (data warehouse). Because of the way the PeopleSoft database is constructed, generating reports can be difficult. Institutional Research worked very closely with Shahnaz to develop a reporting data mart that academic departments use to produce many reports, lists and mailing labels. All of the other PeopleSoft institutions face similar challenges. Some of them have contacted us for further information as well as requesting a copy of the programs that Shahnaz wrote to create the data mart tables.
