Frequently Asked Questions - Smart Classrooms


How do I request a Smart Classroom?
Smart Classrooms can be requested through the registrar's office.  Please contact their office at 442-5540.

Are there tutorials or workshops available to learn how to use the smart classrooms?
Yes, tutorials are available at the beginning of each semester; please check our website, www.albany.edu/its for specific dates and times.  One on One instruction is also available at your request. For further information please email smartclass@albany.edu.

What makes a Smart classroom "smart"?
Smart Classrooms are equipped with different forms of technology to enhance the student learning experience. A blend of Computers, VCR's, Laptop Connections, DVD players, and Document Cameras (located in LC's, but available upon request for podium rooms), are incorporated in these classrooms for faculty use.  A list, of which room contains what, is available at the following location.

What if equipment breaks down immediately before or during a class?
If you should experience a malfunction of sorts, please call our Audio/Visual Office immediately, we can be reached at 442-3647.  A member of our Operational/Technical Staff will be over to help alleviate the problem. Please be aware that not every malfunction will be solved in an immediate fashion, some problems may have to be outsourced for further attention.

Am I able to show PowerPoint Presentations?
Absolutely, The smart classrooms are equipped with over 60 different pieces of software for your convenience, including the Microsoft Office Package.  The computers are equipped with media types such as CD Drives, Floppy Drives, and USB ports for Jump or Flash Drives.  You may also connect to your Network drive. Can I load my own software onto the smart classroom machines?
No, nothing can be installed or downloaded onto these computers.  However, you can use your own software via a laptop connection.  These rooms are equipped with VGA cables so you may project your laptop image onto the projection screen.  If you do not have a laptop, and would like to request one of ours to use for a specific class time, please make an appointment with our office at 442-3647 or stop by LC-15.

Are Mac's compatible with the Smart Classroom technology?
Yes, through our laptop connections you may hook up a Mac product such as an IBook or Powerbook.  Macintosh products come with adapters that make them Mac to PC ready.  Contact the office at 442-3647 for further information.
