ALARMComputing Alert System
Computing security is an important and ever-growing area of concern for many members of the Univeristy at Albany's computing community. The University's Alert and Resource Monitoring (ALARM) group has been established to make one more source of security-related information available to those members of the UA computing community who deal with computing security issues on a regular basis.
The primary function of ALARM is to monitor security-related resources and determine/distribute any information that may be beneficial to the UA computing community. ALARM is comprised of a representative from the following ITS departments: Systems Maintenance and Operations (Eric Torgersen), Client Support Services (Marty Manjak), and Telecommunications (Trevor Corbett).
ALARM will convene to discuss any information/alerts that its members determine to be potentially and specifically relevant to the University computing community. Information forwarded from ALARM will generally fit into two categories of communication:
The primary means of distribution for Memos and Alerts for ALARM is via email messages. The University at Albany ITS, however, does not send out virus removal tools, virus updates or security updates via e-mail attachments.
- Memos (sent to University Administration when a campus-wide countermeasure is suggested and requires approval) and
- Alerts (sent to technical coordinators within the University computing community for consideration or further distribution).
These Memos and Alerts will also be available on the ITS webpage at: http://www.albany.edu/its.
It is important to note that ALARM is not a cure-all for security breaches, nor is it intended to supplant any security measures already in place. Technology coordinators, as well as the entire UAlbany user community should always take precautions against unwanted intrusions. It is, however, one more way that ITS personnel are working to help ensure a safer computing environment. And all users should check the ITS homepage at http://www.albany.edu/its for important information and updates on alerts.
