Summary: Microsoft is reporting that one of the patches released in its July 2004 security bulletin may result in sharing violation problems and/or increased network traffic/diminished performance. The problem is apparently found on certain Windows XP machines on which Microsoft Security Bulletin MS04-024 was applied. MS04-024 was included in the July '04 bulletin under the 'Important' category. The title of MS04-024 is "Vulnerability in Windows Shell Could Allow Remote Code Execution (839645)".Recommended Actions: Microsoft has provided a link which describes the problem in more detail and also offers information on a hotfix for this problem. If you detect aberrant behavior on an XP machine after installing patch MS04-024 you should visit the Microsoft link (provided in the Resources section of this alert) for more information.
