Important information about the life cycle of your student computer account

The University provides all students with an official albany.edu email account and access to a variety of campus IT services for the duration of their studies at Albany. Graduate accounts are deactivated for those students whose statute of limitations has expired and who have not registered for at least one year. Undergraduate accounts are deactivated for those students who have not registered for at least one year.

These services are intended for current students. By deactivating accounts for students who are no longer studying at the University, these resources can be reclaimed for active members of the campus community.

When an account is deactivated, a student no longer has an albany.edu email address, messages that were in that account, or access to any University services that requires logging in with a NetID and password, with the exception of MyUAlbany. Shortly after deactivation all information associated with the account is deleted. Please note that deleted files (including email, documents and web pages) are irretrievable. Students will still be able to access MyUAlbany using their NetID and password.

Should you return to the University, your registration will automatically reactivate your account and access to all University-provided IT services. Please note that you will not be able to retrieve any files or emails that were previously stored there.

If you receive a message that your account will be deactivated and you believe this is an error, please contact the ITS Service Desk (518) 442-4000 or submit an online request.

Recommended Actions To Take Prior to Account Deactivation

  1. If you don't already have a personal email account, set one up with an independent provider.  Gmail and Yahoo offer free email accounts.
  2. If you wish to retain any current mail messages stored in your UAlbany mailbox, you can either forward the messages to your personal email address, or you can save an archive of your mail folders.  Click here for detailed instructions on archiving your existing messages.
  3. Download any files from your UNIX account that you wish to retain and save to your personal computer or storage device. Click here for detailed instructions.
