The University recognizes Skype and similar voice-over-IP programs as valuable resources providing students, faculty and staff the ability to collaborate with colleagues almost anywhere in the world.
Members of the campus community should note, however, that the Skype licensing agreement commits University network and computer resources to Skype’s business operations which could adversely impact local networking and computer performance.
Before running Skype on the University network, ITS recommends configuring your machine by following these three simple steps:
- From the Main Menu, select “Tools”; then select “Options”.
- Uncheck the box that says “Start Skype when I start Windows.”
- Save your changes.
This prevents Skype from using the University network for Skype traffic while the application is not in use, and protects the machine from potential attacks targeting the Skype service.
