Summer Academic Institute (S.A.I.)

June 3 —July 25 , 2008

The Summer Academic Institute (S.A.I.) is designed for Graduate and Undergraduate international students who have been accepted to the University at Albany for the Fall semester. We will also accept matriculated international students who are currently studying at an American university. The S.A.I.'s 8 week course will help you gain the confidence you need for academic success.

Course Descriptions:

Academic Reading and Writing

The goal of this course is provide skills and strategies for reading and writing effectively at the university level. Course objectives include:

  • Read and analyze academic essays and journal articles
  • Engage in critical analysis in class discussions and writing assignments
  • Write persuasive and summary/response papers
  • Conduct library research
  • Write short research papers
  • Learn proper style of documentation
  • Improve English sentence structure and grammar

Oral Communication

The goal of this course is to help students develop their listening, speaking and note-taking skills and to gain confidence speaking in an academic English environment. Course objectives include:

  • Listen to college level lectures
  • Practice strategies for taking well-organized and complete lecture notes
  • Learn and practice the language of small and large-group discussions
  • Learn and practice the language and structure of a formal oral presentation
  • Practice features of English pronunciation difficult for non-native speakers

The courses and activities, in the Summer Academic Institute, will help familiarize students with American culture and the University system.

Cost:

Summer Academic Institute (S.A.I.):
Tuition: $1600 (includes instruction, textbooks, class materials and some activities)
Application fee (non-refundable): $80
DHL Express Mail: $50
(S.A.I. fees are paid to the University at Albany .)

University Fees: (mandatory)
Health Insurance: Approximately $200
Summer session fee: $55
SEVIS fee: $40
Dormitory: $1972 (approximate cost for room and meals.)
(You may choose to live on-campus in the University dormitories or off-campus. If you choose to live off-campus, you must make your own arrangements.)
(University fees are paid to the University at Albany in early July.)

Who may attend

The Summer Academic Institute will give priority to University at Albany international students who have been accepted for the Fall semester. We will also accept matriculated international students who are currently studying at an American university.

Please note: All students are expected to attend the entire eight week session, attend all classes and complete all assignments. Classes are scheduled Monday through Friday. Students in the SAI are considered fully enrolled in the University at Albany and have access to all libraries and computing centers on campus.

How to apply

It is necessary to apply separately to the Summer Academic Institute. Your University at Albany I-20 needs to reflect your early entry date into the U.S.

Please complete and print the SAI application form and return it by express mail or fax. (If faxed, please mail the SAI application fee by express mail as soon as possible. The application fee should be in the form of a money order or bank check made out to the University at Albany .)
