ESL Courses for University Students
The Intensive English Language Program offers ESL courses for international students who are currently enrolled in the University. Oral communication and academic writing courses are designed to give students the skills and practice they need to succeed in university level course work.
These semester long courses do not offer academic credit and will not be placed on students' official university transcripts. These courses are 3 credit load equivalency for University at Albany students who are on F-1 visas.
Courses: (Offered only in Spring and Fall semesters)
ESL 001: Oral Communication for International Students
Oral Communication for International Students is for those who wish to improve their speaking and pronunciation skills. Students will work to develop more confidence in academic speaking and to increase their fluency and comprehensibility. Individualized attention will be given to help students reduce pronunciation errors that cause misunderstanding.
ESL 002: Academic Writing for International Students
Academic Writing for International Students is for Undergraduate International Students and for first semester International Graduate Students who are experiencing special problems. This course will provide students with essential skills needed to improve writing skills for academic purposes. It will prepare students to develop good organization, correct sentence structure, precise punctuation and mechanics, and well-developed paragraphs. Students will need to buy materials for this course.
International Graduate Students who are able to carry a normal 12-credit load in the semester, or 9 credits if they hold an Assistantship, are recommended to take the more advanced writing course ETAP 500 or ETAP 687.
Who may attend:
These courses are intended for international students who are currently enrolled in the University at Albany. If space is available, we will accept non-UAlbany students in the area for an extra $100 fee per course. These ESL courses are for students who are already in the United States and who have a university level of English ability. An applicant for these classes WILL NOT be issued an I-20. Visit the IELP Program for information about how to study in the United States with an F-1 Student Visa.
