ESL Courses for University Students
The Intensive English Language Program offers ESL courses for international students who are currently enrolled in the University. Oral Communication, Academic Writing, and International Teaching Assistant courses are designed to give students the skills and practice they need to succeed in university level course work.
Courses: (Offered only in Spring and Fall semesters)
ESL 001: Oral Communication for International Students
Oral Communication for International Students is for those who wish to improve their speaking and pronunciation skills. Students will work to develop more confidence in academic speaking and to increase their fluency and comprehensibility. Individualized attention will be given to help students reduce pronunciation errors that cause misunderstanding. (Course is 3 credit load equivalency for University at Albany students.)
ESL 002: Academic Writing for International Students
Academic Writing for International Students will provide students with essential skills needed to improve writing skills for academic purposes. To this end, students will write journal entries, summaries, essays, in-class essays and a final research paper. The course will focus on grammar, sentence structure, paraphrasing, summarizing, quoting, and various patterns of organizing academic writing. Students are encouraged to bring writing assignments from other courses for analysis and editing. Students may need to buy materials for this course. (Course is 3 credit load equivalency for University at Albany students.)
Communication Skills for International Teaching Assistants (ITAs)
The objectives of this course are to help ITAs improve communication skills (pronunciation, listening comprehension, grammar, non-verbal communication, compensatory communication techniques) for instructional purposes; to familiarize ITAs with the academic backgrounds and expectations of American undergraduates; to help ITAs develop teaching strategies that facilitate effective classroom communication; to assist in heightening ITAs awareness of the cultural and educational characteristics of undergraduate education at the university. Student micro-teaching lessons are videotaped and reviewed.
