Art 500 Master’s of Arts Departmental Seminar (3)
This class is designed to provide the Master’s of Arts student with a range of historical, social, and aesthetic contexts germane to contemporary art practice. The course objective is to both broaden and deepen the student’s understanding of contemporary art and to facilitate the student’s ability to operate with greater criticality and self-awareness as a developing artist. Student presentations, written assignments, and the development of an artist statement. Prerequisite(s): Enrollment in the Master’s of Arts program, or graduate standing and permission of instructor.
Art 505A Advanced Drawing and Related Media (3)
A studio course for graduate students to explore drawing in relationship to the development of their work and artistic vision. Drawing is presented both as an exploratory tool as well as a media in which to produce finished works. Individual attention is combined with technical and formal criticism in the development of a personal visual idiom. Prerequisites: Enrollment in the MA program or permission of instructor.
Art 505B Advanced Drawing and Related Media (3)
In this course, stress will be placed on how the practice of drawing can incorporate a wide range of approaches and methods. Individual attention and critique provide feedback to aid students in the development of a distinctive and coherent body of work. Art 526 Music Composition in Electronic Media I (3)
An introduction to compositional and studio techniques for electronic music composition. Students will gain exposure to digital audio editing and sequencing, basic signal processing, and relevant musical structures. Projects will reflect a variety of aesthetic approaches and disciplines from experimental traditions, sound art, multimedia, and more popular forms. AMUS 426 cannot be taken for credit if a student has already taken AART 426. Students who have received credit for AMUS/AART426 cannot receive credit for this course. Prerequisites: Mus 100 or by permission of instructor.
Art 527 Music Composition in Electronic Media II (3)
This course is an advanced seminar in sound design, audio art, electronic musical composition and related fields, with an emphasis on evaluation and discussion of creative studio work produced by students. A continuation of studies initiated in Mus 426/Art 426/Art 526 with a focus on advanced techniques and aesthetics. Prerequisite: Mus 426/Art 426/Art 526 or by permission of instructor.
Art 528 Sound Design and Multimedia (3)
Theory and techniques of how sound and music are composed for use in multi-media fields, including Theatre, the World Wide Web, installation art, CD-ROM and video. Students will work on original projects in their respective disciplines. The focus of this course will vary. Prerequisites: Mus 325, 426 and/or permission of instructor.
Art 529 Live Electronic Performance (3)
A survey of the history, techniques and aesthetics of live electronic music and sound installation art, beginning in the 1960s, and instruction in interactive and other forms of performance practice. Techniques for live sound production will be addressed. Students will perform and tech original works and their interpretation of historical works. May be repeated for a total of 12 credits. Designed for those already familiar with the methods of applying light- sensitive emulsions to various materials. The graduate student will be involved in advanced approaches to nonsilver photography. The work produced must show mastery of advanced techniques and meet appropriate aesthetic standards. Art 547 Phototechniques for Printmakers (3)
Designed for those already possessing knowledge of advanced etching and lithographic printing techniques. The printmaker will learn to expose and process film and apply the resultant image to an etching and/or lithographic plate. Progress is reviewed in individual conferences. Students will undertake multiple-plate printmaking techniques. Limited to six printmakers. Prerequisite: Knowledge of etching and hand lithography techniques.
