The TESOL masters program in the Department
of Educational Theory and Practice educates professionals
who wish to teach English in a wide range of situations
including teaching English to children and adults
in the United States and other English speaking
countries (ESL), as well as teaching English as
a Foreign Language (EFL) to children and adults
in non-English-speaking countries throughout the
world.
The program prepares professionals for a wide range of positions. The basic masters program provides the knowledge and experience to teach English to speakers of other languages throughout the world. Additional course requirements allow individuals to qualify as teachers of English as a second language in public schools in New York State.
Applicants must:

Indicate their intention to qualify for the general TESOL MS or the MS plus New York State certification at the time of application; |
| 2. |
If native speakers of English, meet admission requirements for 12 hours of study of another language and culture; |
| 3. |
If native speakers of a language other than
English, demonstrate proficiency in English
with a minimum score of 600 on the paper-based,
250 on the computer-based, or 100 on the Internet-based
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
or the IELTS equivalent. |

Have completed an undergraduate general introduction to linguistics course. |
Program of Study for MS in TESOL (Planning Sheet)
A minimum of 35 graduate credits is required for the Masters Degree in TESOL appropriate for students preparing to teach English as a foreign language (EFL), or to teach English to adults or others in out of school contexts in English speaking countries. Requirements for this program (consult planning sheet for specific courses) include at a minimum:

6 credits of Foundation Courses (3 in Social Thought and 3 in Human Learning and Development) |

12 credits in the teaching of English to speakers of other languages |
|
3 credits of appropriate field experience |
|
8 credits in language and cultural studies |
|
3 credits in related electives |
|
3 credits in research |
PLEASE NOTE: Program requirements for the TESOL program for students who are NOT seeking New York State certification were revised effective with the fall 2005 semester. Students entering in fall 2005 and later must satisfy the new requirements. Students who entered the program earlier may complete either set of program options. (See Graduate Bulletin)
