Sheridan Preparatory Academy

University students could engage in a range of activities such as 1) providing tutorial support supervision to students in learning centers such as crafts, construction, puzzles, board games, science and mathematics, computer class and recreation; 2) one-on-one or small group tutoring for school subjects; 3) listening to a child read; 4) reading to a child or a group of children; and, 5) planning and directing a self-selecting special activity one or two times per week. School administrators are particularly interested in offering programs, presentations and activities that are not already provided. These might include classes in American sign language, French, Spanish and other languages, origami, knitting, sewing, drama, dance etc.

The experience is appropriate for anyone who likes children. The school welcomes University volunteers in all majors and minors. The Academy is developing programs to serve a diverse population of inner city students in grades K-6. This experience might be of particular interest to students majoring in art, Asian studies, computer science, education, French, music, linguistics, biology, mathematics, Latin American studies, Italian, Japanese studies, psychology, social welfare or urban studies and planning.
