SCHUYLER ACHIEVEMENT ACADEMY
The school provides after school services to children in grades k-6 and their families from 3:00 pm until 6:00 pm. Children engage in a wide vriety of program activities including homework, studying, reading and writing, learning centers, arts and crafts, computer, recreation, cultural events, presentations and clubs.
University students could engage in a range of activities such as 1) providing tutorial support supervision to students in learning centers including crafts, construction, puzzles, board games, science and mathematics activities, computer class and recreation; 2) one-on-one or small group tutoring for school subjects; 3) listening to a child read; 4) reading to a child or a group of children; and 5) planning and directing a self-selecting special activity one to two times per week. The Academy is especially interested in skills, programs, presentations and actitivies that are not already provided. For example these might include classes in American sign language, French, Spanish and other languages, origami, knitting, sewing, drama, singing and dance.
This experience is appropriate for anyone who likes children without regard to majors and minors. However, since the program serves a diverse population of inner city students but might be of special interest to UAlbany students in the following areas of studies: African-American studies, art, Asian studies, computer science, education, French, music, linguistics, biology, mathematics, Latin American studies, Italian, Japanese studies, psychology, social welfare, and urban studies and planning. NOTE: Because this work involves direct contact with children, this site will offer free fingerprinting, photographing and a two-hour child service class free of charge. Because the after-school program ends after dark, students will be provided with escorts or rides to the nearest bus stop.
