SCHENECTADY COMMUNITY ACTION PROGRAMS, INC. (SCAP)
SCAP is committed to alleviating the symptoms and eradicating the causes of poverty by helping people help themselves when they are in economic, educational or social need. We do this by identifying changing community needs and mobilizing resources, administering programs that address on-going community needs and by providing individual and systemic advocacy on behalf of the people SCAP serves. Programs include: Head Start, Sojourn House for teen mothers and babies, Career Readiness and Community Services.
Service learning students will have the opportunity to monitor staff providing crisis intervention, family development and career readiness services to customers. When they feel comfortable doing so, they will see individuals and offer case management, advocacy and information and referral services. Students will be introduced to the administrative aspects of not-for-profit work including facilitating computer skills training workshops, data collection and tracking, report preparation, networking, web site and brochure development, community awareness, grant writing and development/fundraising.
