Public School 20 -- YMCA After School Program
The school provides after school services for children in grades K - 6 and
their families. Children engage in a wide variety of program activities including
homework, studying, rading and writing, learning centers, arts and crafts,
computers, recreation, cultural events, presentations and clubs.
Primarily, UAlbany students would be responsible for providing academic support
services to elementary students. This could include help with homework (reading
directions, checking homework, etc.,) listening to students read, helping
with basic mathematics skills, helping with spelling and vocabulary and learning
basic social studies and science skills.
This experience is appropriate for anyone who like children without regard
to majors and minors. However, because it is aprogram serving a diverse population
of inner city students UAlbany students in the following disciplines might
be particularly interested: African-American studies, art, Asian studies,
computer science, education, French, music, linguistics, bioloty, mathematics,
Latin American studies, Italian, Japanese studies, psychology, social welfare,
urban studies and planning.
Because this work involves direct contact with children, the site will offer
free fingerprinting, photographing and a child service class free of charge.
