Health Disparities Researcher Development Award

Proposal Due January 15, 2008

The University at Albany Center for the Elimination of Minority Health Disparities (CEMHD) is pleased to announce its 2008 competition for the Health Disparities Researcher Development Award. The purpose of the Center is to build capacity for health disparities research at the University at Albany by identifying community needs, focusing on barriers to utilization of prevention programs and health care, and to begin scientific projects with community groups to test programs that may reduce barriers and improve utilization, and ultimately health.

To help meet this goal, CEMHD is offering $9,000 for one or more researcher, each to promote the development of health disparities research agendas. Proposals should fit within the Center’s focus on conducting participatory research in communities of disadvantaged persons in smaller cities and towns in upstate New York.

This award is intended to provide seed money for small projects to help researchers succeed in attracting external funding for research on health disparities in smaller communities.

Who is eligible to apply:
Applicants may be of any rank, but preference will be given to junior faculty. Awardees will be named Associates of CEMHD. Previously funded CEMHD principle investigators and new investigators are equally encouraged to apply for these funds.

What funds may be used for:
Money allocated under this program may be used to hire a research assistant, to conduct of pilot project, or to test instruments.

How to apply:
Please submit a curriculum vitae or resume; and, to reduce duplication of effort in applying for support, please submit a proposal in the UAlbany FRAP program format (see http://www.albany.edu/research/osp/FRAP.pdf). Submit via email to Robert Miller, Ph.D. (Mentoring and Training Core Director) at rmiller@albany.edu with copies required to Wilma Alvarado-Little (walittle@albany.edu) and Lawrence Schell (lmschell@albany.edu).

Award Expectations:
The intention of these funds is to advance projects that concern minority health and health disparities in upstate New York and can contribute to an application to NIH for a center grant that will support CEMHD as it develops. Supportable projects will be ones that when completed will be ready to be included in the CEMHD’s center grant application in the form of either a full fledged research proposal or a solid pilot study (the R0-1, R0-3 or R-21 NIH proposal types). Highest priority will be given to projects that are consistent with the goals of the Center for the Elimination of Minority Health Disparities. These are described on the Center’s website (www.albany.edu/cemhd).

  • Since projects should be well advanced or completed in order to be a part of the CEMHD center grant application which will be assembled in early summer, projects that can report data findings by June 30, 2008 will receive priority for funding.
  • Proposals must be consistent with the goals of CEMHD.
  • Work should concern minority health and be conducted in upstate New York.
  • Previously funded CEMHD principle investigators and new investigators are equally encouraged to apply for these funds.
  • Data collection and analysis should be completed by June 08, thus funds may be used to augment existing projects (currently underway).
  • Priority will be given to applications that are capable of expansion (i.e., developing to be an R-03, R-01 or R-21 type of NIH proposal).

Deadlines:
The due date for proposals is  January 15 by 5:00 p.m. Funds will be available on January 30th. All funds must be spent by June 30, 2008.
