The Health Disparities Challenge

Minority communities are less healthy and less well-served. Yet, the solutions for minorities in smaller cities differ from those in big cities. CEMHD seeks these solutions.

  • Healthcare challenges in smaller cities differ from those in big cities.
  • A 1:1 ratio of whites to minorities exists in the New York metropolitan area
  • In upstate New York, that ratio is nearly 7:1
  • Minorities in Upstate New York have
    • Less visibility
    • Less support, both informal and formal
    • Less access to wealth
    • Less political leverage

Upstate New York Minority Population

The upstate New York minority population is large.

Economies of scale in serving minority communities in big cities cannot be realized in smaller cities.

Minority communities are dispersed throughout upstate New York.

Therefore, disparity exists between minority and non-minority populations.
