UAlbany Budget Updates
Message from President Philip on Thu, Mar 26, 2009
To All Faculty and Staff:
I am writing with an update on our campus fiscal situation, and to invite you to participate in a Town Hall Meeting in the coming weeks. I know you all have been watching the state and national economic crisis unfold over the past several months, and that you share my concern about the implications of that crisis for the University at Albany. The state budget for the University has been reduced significantly for the 2008-09 fiscal year. When coupled with our own internal budget shortfall, the reductions for 2008-09 total more than $14.2M. If the 2009-10 state budget is enacted as the Governor has proposed, we will experience an additional reduction of over $4M, bringing the total campus reductions to over $18M over the course of two years.
Over the past several months, we have been developing draft plans in each of the divisions to address the immediate need for reductions. Working with these proposals, and with the principles offered by the Budget Advisory Group, we now have a draft of a campus-wide plan. I invite you to attend one of several Town Hall Meetings over the next two weeks, where Provost Susan Phillips, Vice President for Finance & Business Kathryn Lowery, and I will provide an update on the University's budget, provide information about the draft campus budget reduction plan, and respond to your questions. I hope you will plan to attend one of these meetings - we are looking for as much feedback as possible as we try to weather these incredibly difficult times.
The Town Hall Meetings are scheduled as follows:
Wednesday, April 1 10:00-11:00a
D'Ambra Auditorium, Life Sciences Building
Thursday, April 2 11:00a-12:00p
SPH Auditorium, George Building, East Campus
Thursday, April 2 1:00-2:00p
Arthur Levitt Room, Downtown Campus
Monday April 6 10:30-11:30a
Assembly Hall, Campus Center
We look forward to seeing you.
George M. Philip
