UAlbany Budget Updates

Message from President Philip on Wed, Jan 21, 2009

To the University at Albany Community:

As I am sure you are aware, the University at Albany has experienced significant reductions in state funding and may face further reductions as the New York State budget process continues to unfold. As a result, the UAlbany community must be prepared to respond to the new resource picture in a responsible and coordinated manner.

To assist me in formulating the Universityís response to this new budget climate, I have commissioned a Budget Advisory Group, comprised of faculty and staff from across the Universityís divisions, colleges and schools. This Budget Advisory Group will provide consultation on how best to shape our campus financial plan in this time of dramatically reducing resources.

Membership in the Budget Advisory Group includes:

Jim Acker, Distinguished Teaching Professor, School of Criminal Justice

Edna Acosta-Belen, Distinguished Professor, Latin American, Caribbean, & US Latino Studies, College of Arts and Sciences

Adrienne Bonilla, Director, Office of Regulatory Research Compliance

Cynthia Brady, Assistant to the Vice President for Student Success

Mary Casserly, Librarian, Assistant Director for Collections

Edward Cupoli, Professor, College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering

John Delano, Distinguished Teaching Professor and Senate Chair, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences

Diane Dewar, Associate Professor, Health Policy, Management, and Behavior, School of Public Health and Economics, College of Arts and Sciences

Jan Hagen, Distinguished Teaching Professor, School of Social Welfare

Helmut Hirsch, Distinguished Teaching Professor, Biological Sciences/Psychology, College of Arts and Sciences

Linda Krzykowski, Vice Dean for Administration, School of Business

Hamp Lankford, Professor, Educational Administration & Policy Studies, School of Education, and Economics, College of Arts and Sciences

Andi Lyons, Professor, Theater, College of Arts and Sciences

Kajal Lahiri, Distinguished Professor, Economics, College of Arts and Sciences, and Health Policy, Management, and Behavior, School of Public Health

In addition, I have asked Provost Susan Phillips and Vice President for Finance and Business, Kathryn Lowery to serve as co-chairs.

Over the next several weeks, the Budget Advisory Group will meet to discuss the needs and priorities of the University as we move forward in addressing this budget challenge. I have asked them to develop, by the end of February, a set of considered principles and priorities to use in shaping the Campus Financial Plan.

Despite the uncertainty and difficult choices expected in the months ahead, I am confident the University at Albany will preserve its reputation for high quality education and top-notch research, and will remain an outstanding place in which to learn, work and live. As always, I welcome your suggestions regarding our budget situation and financial plan. We have set up a special address for this purpose: SuggestionBox@uamail.albany.edu.

With best wishes for the semester ahead,

George M. Philip
Interim President
