The University at Albany provides various funding opportunities to ensure graduate study is affordable — and works closely with prospective and current students to explore all financial assistance opportunities.
In addition to university-wide merit and need-based financial assistance, individual programs and departments offer specific scholarships, fellowships, assistantships, and employment. Please contact your program or department for more information.
The University’s Office of Student Financial Services administers a variety of federal, state and private aid programs on a calculated need basis, and can help guide you through the paperwork and process of applying for financial aid.
To become eligible for federal financial aid, you must file the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and be admitted to or matriculated in a degree program at least half-time (a minimum of six credits per term). Other need-based funding programs may have additional or alternate eligibility requirements.
Academically competitive, merit-based awards are available in a variety of UAlbany graduate programs. Many, but not all, of these awards are intended for doctoral students, and generally support full-time graduate students.
Graduate Assistantships provide a program-related practical teaching, research or administrative experience. In addition to significant educational benefits, assistantships offer a stipend for the teaching, research or administrative service provided.
Tuition Scholarships are applied directly to a student’s tuition costs.

Graduate Opportunity Program (GOP) - provides tuition assistance to Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP), and Search for Education, Elevation, and Knowledge (SEEK) program graduates undertaking graduate study at a participating SUNY institution.
Carson Carr Graduate Diversity Fellowship - a competitive, merit-based, program for full-time graduate students who will contribute to the diversity of the student body in the graduate or professional program in which they will be enrolled.
Dissertation Research Fellowship Awards Program - The University has a limited number of fellowships available annually to assist doctoral candidates in offsetting research expenses.
Presidential Doctoral Fellowship for Research Training in Health Disparities - Fellows can pursue any doctoral program at the University at Albany and receive transdisciplinary training in health disparities. Fellows receive Training/Mentorship and Financial Benefits.

UAlbany Alumni Association Scholarships - For more than 30 years, the University at Albany Alumni Association has provided scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students to help continue UAlbany’s tradition of excellence and opportunity.
Graduate Scholar Ambassador Award - Provides funding for graduate students to travel to their alma mater, present their scholarly activities, and serve as ambassadors for our graduate programs. Deadline to apply is November 15, 2019. Please note, you must have the free Adobe® Acrobat® Reader properly installed on your computer in order to use and print the Scholar Ambassador Award Application PDF Form.
SUNY Chancellor's Graduate Research Scholarship (GRS) - is a one-time $5,000 award to SUNY students who win awards in a Federal predoctoral research0based fellowship competition.
GSEU Professional Development Awards Program - The University at Albany and the Graduate Student Employees Union (GSEU) are pleased to announce the availability of funds for the Professional Development Awards Program provided for and funded under the 2016-2019 Collective Bargaining Agreement between the State of New York and GSEU. This program is designed to support a variety of professional development activities that help teaching and graduate assistants develop their professional skills and prepare them for careers in their disciplines. All full-time and part-time teaching and graduate assistants represented by the GSEU are eligible and are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity. Applications must be received on or before 5:00 p.m., Monday, May 6, 2019.
Alumni Association Scholarship Opportunities
Alumni Association Spirit Scholarship ($1,125 each): Awarded to four UAlbany students who demonstrate outstanding school spirit and commitment to the University and its students.
The Adna W. Risley Memorial Scholarship ($750 each): Awarded to a UAlbany senior or graduate student pursuing a graduate degree in history.
Scholarship applications will be available online beginning Jan. 28, 2020 at www.alumni.albany.edu/scholarships. Bertha Brimmer applications are due February 21. All other applications are due March 3. For more information, contact the Alumni Association at [email protected] or (518) 442-3080.
