UAlbany in the News

by Lisa James Goldsberry (March 4, 2005)

A January 9 Chicago Tribune article featured quotes from Rob Edelman of the Department of Art. "Coach Celluloid: The Teacher, the Motivator, the Father Figure" discussed America's affinity for big-screen coaches. Edelman, author of Great Baseball Films, was quoted as saying, "Coaches are charismatic characters. They make great heroes and villains, and they are involved in issues related to character-building, as well as winning and losing." The article went on to evaluate some of the best examples in cinema of coaching.

UAlbany student Amy Caudill was featured in a Los Angeles Times article January 21. Titled "Mock Coffins, Real Anger," the article highlighted protesters who came from all over the country to march, chant, and turn their backs on the inaugural festivities for a president they oppose. "There are a lot of people who are proud, frustrated, and patriotic at the same time," Caudill said as she marched with thousands of other antiwar protesters who lined the route of the inaugural parade.

Alain Kaloyeros, dean of the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering, was quoted in the February 4 issue of Business Week. In "New York's Big Hopes for Nano" he discussed how the state is shaping up as a power in the emerging technology. "States are viewing nanotechnology as a platform to put in place a research and development infrastructure and to attract jobs," he was quoted as saying. Albany is a new nano force to be reckoned with, according to the article.

CORRECTION: In the last issue of Update, the UAlbany in the News section contained an error. The article about the tsunami tragedy was NOT written by Stephen Wasby. It was written by Ron McClamrock of the Philosophy department. The Update regrets the error.
