UAlbany in the News
by Lisa James Goldsberry (February 4, 2005)
An Associated Press article on Dec. 23, 2004
highlighted a study done by the Center for Women
in Government and Civil Society. The article “More
Women in State Government in Recent Years” was
a profile of outgoing Missouri Governor Bob Holden,
in which he used the study to illustrate some of
his accomplishments. According to the article,
the UAlbany study, Appointed
Policy Makers in State Government, Five-Year Trend
Analysis, found that
Missouri moved from 41st in the country in 1999
to fifth in 2003, giving it one of the biggest
jumps of any state.
• The December 31 edition of the New
York Daily News featured quotes from Alan Chartock, professor
emeritus of communication. In “Losing Big
to Chuck Pays Off for GOPer” Chartock discussed
a new job for Assemblyman Howard Mills, appointed
by Gov. George Pataki to head the state Insurance
Department. “Ain’t politics wonderful?
A guy runs on a suicide mission and gets rewarded
for services badly done,” Chartock was quoted
as saying.
• Stephen Wasby, a UAlbany philosophy professor,
wrote an article for the Jan. 16, 2005 Baltimore
Sun. “Horrors Such as Tsunami Tragedy Pose
Difficult Questions for Faithful” focused
on how commentators are giving philosophical consideration
to belief in God in questioning the recent tragedy. “The
horrible carnage of this natural disaster is as
clear and concrete an illustration of what philosophers
and theologians call ‘the problem of natural
evil’ as you’ll find,” he wrote.
