Fountain Day

Once the countdown is completed, the main campus fountain transforms into a flurry of multicolored beach balls. Students splash in the fountain's waters, celebrating the beginning of spring and the end of the school year.

Dressed in red and white boxing shorts and gloves, University at Albany Great Danes mascot Damien is coming out swingin' for this year's Fountain Day -- or at least splashin'. UAlbany celebrates Fountain Day 2009 under the guise of the classic movie, "Rocky."

With its community-building atmosphere, Fountain Day's attractions for students include games, contests and entertainment, while faculty and staff share in the festivities by volunteering to coordinate activities and helping serve food and refreshments.

This year's activities, slated from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on April 26, will feature performances by the Greek community and UAlbany Fencing Club. There will be free caricatures, photo booths, massage stations and tattoo tents. Other games and activities, including jousting, bungee runs and boxing and bull rides, will also highlight Fountain Day 2009.

The event, sponsored the Division of Student Success, UAlbany Student Association, and University Auxiliary Services, will also feature free food, music and contests throughout the day.

"One of the University at Albany's most treasured traditions, Fountain Day unites the campus community in a rite of spring and school spirit," said Vice President of Student Success Christine Bouchard. "This annual event is unique among colleges and universities throughout the nation."

Thousands of students, faculty, staff, and alumni turn out at the main campus fountain and, after a thunderous countdown, the 30-foot-high waters of the fountain are released, officially ushering in springtime. This year, Student Association President Dan Truchan will introduce Interim President George M. Philip, who will begin the ceremonial countdown at 3 p.m.

Once the countdown is completed, the main campus fountain transforms into a flurry of multicolored beach balls. Students splash in the fountain's waters, celebrating the near-end of another semester and the beginning of spring.
