"Here is my chance to own a home with the opportunity of bettering not only my life, but my kids'."

University at Albany students are giving back to the community Jan. 30-Feb. 4 in a week-long series of fund-raising events designed to raise money for Capital Region Habitat for Humanity.

A dodgeball tournament and bingo are among the activities planned for the University's Habitat for Humanity Week.

So far, the University has raised $9,059 of its goal of $25,000 to contribute toward a Campus Partnership House for a single mother and her two children. The University has joined with Siena College, The College of Saint Rose, Albany Medical College, and the Albany College of Pharmacy in this effort.

The collective goal is to raise $70,000 to build a house for one local family. The house will be built on the corner of Broadway and Emmett Street in downtown Albany.

"Here is my chance to own a home with the opportunity of bettering not only my life, but my kids'. No more moving from here to there, too small rooms or lack of space. Habitat for Humanity, here we come," said Nicole, a single mother of children ages 2 and 10, who qualified with Habitat to be the recipient of the home.

AMONG THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK ARE:

JAN. 31
7-10 p.m. DANE-O — It's Bingo for Great Danes in the Campus Center Ballroom; buy your card and play to win raffle tickets for a chance to win several great prizes: iPod, DVD players, TVs and more – all for a good cause.

FEB. 2
7 p.m. – Midnight Dawgball II, in the Physical Education building gym – Dodgeball tournament back by popular demand! Organize a team of six people and sign up on the Web to compete. There is an entry fee of $5 per person.
