CAMPAIGN UPDATE Momentum for the Campaign for UAlbany continues to build as regional kickoffs are held around the country. More than 55 alumni attended a kickoff reception at the home of Ilan Nissan ’85 in Short Hills, New Jersey, June 12. Additional regional kickoffs are being planned in 2003 in Northern California; Westchester, N.Y.; Georgia; and Texas, with more to follow in 2004. GIANTS TICKETS ON SALE Ticket sales for New York Giants training camp events at UAlbany began June 30. The Meet the Giants event (July 30), Intrasquad Scrimmage and Barbecue (August 2) and parking cards for all practice sessions are available. Phone orders are being accepted now at (518) 442-4683. Box office sales at UAlbany's Athletic Ticket Office begin July 21. Details.

Susan Phillips, Ph.D., has been named dean of the School of Education. She served as interim dean since March 2002. Phillips, who has been associated with UAlbany for the past two decades, has served as a professor, program director and department chair.

Kathryn Lowery has been appointed vice president for finance and business, the chief financial officer
for the campus. She was previously associate vice president for financial management and budget at UAlbany and has served as interim vice president since April 2002.

Peter Bloniarz has been named dean of the School of Information Science and Policy at the University. He was formerly interim vice president for research.

CANCER CENTER BREAKS GROUND Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno joined UAlbany President Karen Hitchcock June 24 at a groundbreaking ceremony for the Gen*NY*Sis Center for Excellence in Cancer Genomics at the University's East Campus in Rensselaer. The new cancer research initiative, with $22.5 million in start-up funding from the state's Gen*NY*Sis (Generating Employment Through New York Science) economic development program, will enlist industry and science partners in cutting-edge investigations into the causes and treatment of cancer. PHILOSOPHY PROFESSOR FEATURED IN NEWSWEEK Dr. Bonnie Steinbock, chair of UAlbany’s Department of Philosophy, recently was featured in Newsweek as well as MSNBC NewsLink for her work on fetal rights. Professor Steinbock notes that key questions to ask regarding the beginning of life revolve around the development of a moral status of a human being, awareness of surroundings, and the ability to feel pain. Among her scholarly works and books on medical ethics is "Life Before Birth: The Moral and Legal Status of Embryos and Fetuses."

CHILD RISK CENTER ESTABLISHED The School of Social Welfare has established the Child Welfare, Drug Abuse and Intergenerational Risk Center to advance research on the delivery of effective services for parents in the child welfare system with addiction and co-occurring problems, including HIV/AIDS. The nationally ranked school received a five-year, $1.9 million grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse to promote healthy child development in environments where drug abuse, HIV/AIDS and child welfare intersect.

ROCKEFELLER COLLEGE ANNOUNCES ADVISORY BOARD The Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy launched its new advisory board June 11, co-chaired by Jeffrey Mishkin ’69 and Lewis Wiener ’84. The board’s purpose is to provide advice to the college’s dean and faculty concerning mission, strategy, program and initiatives as well as to assist the college in generating the resources and support it needs to advance excellence in its instructional, research and public service activities. GREAT DANES TAKE ON IVY LEAGUE FOOTBALL TEAM The Great Danes will play Brown University for their home opening game on September 20 at 1 p.m. This will be the first time UAlbany has played an ivy league school in football.

UALBANY VETERANS PROJECT CELEBRATES 2ND ANNIVERSARY Two years ago, the University unveiled its Veterans Wall of Honor, a 9-panel, 36-foot-long mural inscribed with the names of UAlbany servicemen and women. The Wall now holds the names of more than 3,900 UAlbany alumni, students, faculty and staff. ART MUSEUM HOSTS 2003 ARTISTS OF THE MOHAWK HUDSON REGION JURIED EXHIBITION UAlbany's University Art Museum is hosting the 2003 Artists of the Mohawk Hudson Region Juried Exhibition, considered the benchmark showing for the finest contemporary artists working within a 100-mile radius of the Capital Region. THIRD ANNUAL POLO FUNDRAISER The University will host its 3rd Annual Polo Fundraiser August 3 at the Whitney Polo Fields in Saratoga Springs. This year the University is partnering with the Double "H" Hole in the Woods Ranch, a camp for critically ill children. Proceeds will benefit the UAlbany Student-Athlete Scholarship and programs for children at the Ranch. Details.

BIG PURPLE GROWL DATE ANNOUNCED Mark your calendar for the 7th Annual Big Purple Growl and Ferocious Feast, February 7, 2004. This year’s event includes a double-header against the University of Maine. The Growl includes an action-packed night of basketball with special activities, promotions and giveaways preceded by the Ferocious Feast for alumni, faculty/staff and community members.

WASHINGTON, D.C., CHAPTER - GIVING BACK On June 28, twelve UAlbany alumni represented the Washington, D. C., chapter by volunteering to feed the homeless at Community Family Life Services. Volunteers, coordinated by Shannin Addison ’01, ’02, will prepare, serve and deliver food to local community members in need. In addition to providing manpower, the chapter is contributing half of the cost for food and supplies. For more information on this new UAlbany chapter, check out the chapter’s new web site.
